Do I have to pay alimony in a divorce in Florida?

In Florida, alimony can be awarded in certain circumstances. For instance, marriages that have lasted over seven years. There's a presumption in favor of some type of alimony, typically durational alimony, which could last about half the duration of the marriage. For marriages that were 17 years or longer, there's a presumption in favor of permanent periodic alimony. That just typically means that alimony will be awarded until there's been something significant that changes that. I know that currently the Florida legislation has been considering several bills that would reduce the alimony award to a formula. For right now, it's not based on any type of formula. If it is something that's going to be determined by a court and the parties don't agree on an amount or on a duration, then it could be something that would require significant litigation.
