Don McLean, famed singer and songwriter of 'American Pie', an ode to an idyllic United States, finalized his divorce after 30 years of marriage. The divorce comes on the heels of several high-profile incidents involving Mr. McLean and his wife, most recently an arrest allegedly involving domestic violence near the end of 2015.
Any divorce that involves a high-profile couple, even a singer that hasn't topped the charts in years, is going to be more complicated than the average divorce. Mr. McLean had millions of dollars of assets, a lifetime of marriage and children to consider. Surprisingly, Mr. McLean allegedly ignored the prenuptial agreement and agreed to give his wife $10 million. The details of the prenuptial agreement were not released but it is probably safe to assume this was more generous than the agreement to convince his former spouse to agree to rescind the agreement.
His former spouse alleged "adultery, cruel and abusive treatment, and irreconcilable differences" in her complaint. Her filings go on to detail years of abuse that finally exploded late last year.
All divorces are complicated. But the longer you build a life with someone, the harder it is to separate those two lives. After 30 years, it becomes nearly impossible. You must decide who gets to keep the items with sentimental value, divide up retirement, pensions, properties and other assets. It is hopelessly complicated and can take years to sort out.
That is why if you are considering a divorce, then you may want to speak to an attorney. A lawyer can review the situation and your assets to determine the best course of actions to safeguard your future. An attorney is there to be on your side and make your life easier. You don't have to do everything yourself, let an attorney handle the legal side so that you can focus on moving forward with you life.
